Das AEIOU-Projekt wird von der Österreichischen Bundesregierung künftig nicht mehr untersützt. Die Server werden deshalb noch im März abgeschaltet.

Ich bin dagegen und für eine Migration der AEIOU-Artikel auf die (vorerst deutsche) Wikipedia.

Ich möchte hiermit auf meinen Wikinews-Artikel und meine Wikimedia-Userpage verweisen, auf der ihr nähere Informationen erhalten könnt und erfahrt, wie ihr mithelfen könntet, AEIOU zu retten!

Diabetes

So, jetzt bin ich also wieder aus Texas zurueck. Ich bin Anfang Juli zurückgekommen, und aber auch gleich drei Tage danach mit meiner Familie auf Urlaub nach Frankreich (Lyon, Aix en Provence, Côte d'Azur) gefahren. Dort waren wir fuer 14 Tage. Waehrend dieser Zeit haben sich bestimmte Symptome die ich seit cirka Ende Mai hatte verstärkt. Ich hatte die ganze Zeit Hunger und besonders starken Durst. Es konnte durchaus vorkommen, dass ich bis zu acht Liter Wasser pro Tag getrunken habe. Gleichzeitig habe ich allerdings Gewicht verloren. Als ich aus Texas zurückkam wog ich nur 52.5 kg von 60 kg mit denen ich letztes Jahr hinüberflog. Das alles hat meine Eltern doch eher besorgt, und wir haben uns gleich am Freitag (letzter Woche, also den 23. Juli) an einen praktischen Arzt gewendet, der allerdings meinte es sei nichts besonderes, ich solle einfach am darauf folgenden Mittwoch zu einer Blutabnahme kommen. Wieder daheim hat dann mein Vater allerdings seinen Bruder, einen Internisten angerufen, der uns anriet sofort ins Krankenhaus zu gehen und mich untersuchen zu lassen. Dort wurden von mir dann auch gleich eine Blut- und eine Harnprobe genommen, die beide eindeutig bestätigten was verdächtigt wurde: Ich habe Diabetes Typ 1.
Ich bin sofort im Krankenhaus stationiert worden. Ich hatte bei meiner Einlieferung einen Blutzuckerwert von 948 mg (Zucker)/dl (Blut). Normal sind cirka 100 mg/dl.
Im Krankenhaus bin ich bis vorgestern, Freitag den 30. Juli geblieben. Dort habe ich schon am Freitagabend meine erste Insulinspritze bekommen, und meine Schulung setzte sich waehrend der Woche fort. In mehreren Schulungssitzungen habe ich gelernt was genau Diabetes ist, wie der Kohlenhydratstoffwechsel funktioniert, wie ich ab jetzt leben werde, was ich alles ueber Ernaehrung wissen muss, etc. Ich habe viel gelernt, aber ich glaube ich habe soweit alles kapiert.
Natuerlich war es schon ein bisschen ein Schreck, als mir das erste Mal bewusst wurde dass es so ist. Allerdings war die Furcht die ich vor dieser Diagnose noch bevor ich ins Krankenhaus kam am stärksten. Ich wusste kaum etwas ueber Diabetes, und vor dem Unbekannten fürchtet der Mensch sich immer am meisten. Als ich die Diagnose aber dann bekommen habe war ich an sich schon wieder recht ruhig, auch wohl weil es mir einfach nicht hundertprozentig bewusst war. Es wurde mir natuerlich bald voll bewusst, aber meine Reaktion hat sich nicht geändert. Ich sehe es nach wie vor so positiv wie moeglich und moechte jetzt das Beste daraus machen. Als Diabetiker kann man ein ganz normales, gesundes und langes Leben führen. Man muss halt nur nach den Spielregeln spielen, das heißt sich gesund ernähren, viel bewegen, sich an die Insulintherapie halten; das heißt einfach Alles in Allem ein gesundes Leben führen, eine Vorgabe die ja eigentlich fuer jeden gelten sollte, egal ob Diabetiker oder nicht. In meinem Fall ist es halt keine Empfehlung mehr, sondern eine Regel.
Ich bin schon wieder zu Hause und genieße wie immer das Leben. Ich muss zur Zeit zu fixen Zeiten spritzen und essen, aber das macht mir eigentlich nichts aus. Ich werde in voraussichtlich einem halben Jahr auf eine flexiblere Insulintherapieform umgestellt werden, da wird alles noch einmal leichter. Gluecklicherweise kann ich auf eine starke Familie und gute Freunde zaehlen, die mich jetzt sehr gut unterstützen. Und das ist vielleicht eine der wichtigsten Komponenten in so einer Situation.
Ich bin glücklich und freue mich auf den Rest des Sommers.

Immer öfter ertappe ich mich selbst dabei, Sätze und Phrasen die ich schreibe, immer geschraubter zu formulieren - viel "öliger" und vielleicht sogar mehr "political correct". Ich habe keine Ahnung warum das so ist, aber irgendwie ist es auf der einen Seite ja ganz nett, weil es eben oft recht gut klingt, aber auf der anderen Seite seltsam ängstigend ist...

Inzwischen ist es ja eigentlich schon viel zu spät, aber ich freue mich doch mir selbst, bzw. meinem weblog zum ersten Geburtstag zu gratulieren (wann genau ist twoday.net eigentlich nicht-mehr-beta-sondern-normal-version geboren? kann mich daran gar nicht mehr erinnern).
Ich freue mich dass twoday.net so groß ist und blicke hoffnungsvoll auf ein zweites Lebensjahr, in dem ich meinem blog hoffentlich ein bisschen mehr Beachtung schenken werde...(by the way: laut einer Statistik mehrer populärer blog websites sind mehr als 30% aller blogs in den letzten 2 Monaten nicht mehr gewartet worden. Ich glaube ich habe dass ich "Wired" gelesen).

Movie classics - I love them

A couple of weeks ago I walked into Walgreens, one of the pharmacy corporations in the US, and spotted the "DVDs for $3.99" tray.
For I am always curious about DVDs, I walked by, learning that the displayed movies are of such incredibly interesting selection that I do not even remember one name...
However, suddenly one title struck my eye - "Night of the living dead". Indeed it was the original famous 1968 version of the probably first zombie movie ever...Of course I could not resist to look farther into this pile of B-movies and the worst hours Hollywood ever produced, and again I was successful. I uncovered "The cabinet of Dr. Caligari"! I bought both movies at once, not before checking that there was no other bargain left out.
I watched both movies that same evening, stunned by the luck I had. Both movies were on my watchlist for a long time, and of course I was surprised to find them there...
The story even goes on...
Approximately four weeks after this first incident I was at Walgreens again, checking out the "DVDs for $3.99" tray again, disregarding the fact that my chances for such a big hit are probably 1:the number of atoms in the universe.
Probably the universe does not have that many atoms, but what I found was breathtaking: "Nosferatu", digitally restored! Well, they added a soundtrack by "Type 0 Negative", which destroys this great movie with total stupid trash-metal, but since it is a silent movie anyway, I can just mute it...I watched this movie already too, and was delighted...Unfortunately I did not have the chance to watch it at the Sommerkino in the Augarten this summer, since I was already gone at that time...

Now to come to a conclusion, I can report some very nice and recent events...I changend my hostfamily during the holidays, and now I have cable TV. There is one channel solely dedicated to show what is running on other channels, by the way...actually not a bad idea...
Anyway, I happened to discover that Woody Allen's "Sleeper" was to be played on a channel, so I tuned in immediately...This movie has been incredibly delightful now, but it got even better when I heard that after "The Sleeper" they will show "Metropolis"! So now I am watching "Metropolis" here on TV, and I just wanted to share my joy with all of you...

Schule in den USA, Teil 1: SAT

Nachdem sich das erste Semester hier in den USA schon zu den Weihnachtsferien dem Ende zuneigte habe ich persönlich mich erstmal richtig ausspannen können. Mit einem äußerst entspannenden Wochenende in San Antonio, der nächsten großen Stadt, einem schönen Weihnachtstag mit meiner Gastfamilie und dem planmäßigen Wechsel meiner Gastfamilie am 26. Dezember habe ich einige Tage im südlichen Texas nahe der Grenzstadt Laredo verbringen können. Heute, zu Silvester ist es in meiner kleinen Stadt, Kerrville, ziemlich ruhig. Meine (neue) Gastfamilie schläft schon (es ist 22:24), und ich finde endlich Zeit um diesen Artikel zu schreiben.
Doch für die meisten Juniors (= Schüler der 11. Schulstufe) und Seniors (= Schüler der 12. Schulstufe) beginnt mit dem Semesterwechsel ein wirklich ernstes Überlegen:
Die Entscheidung auf welches College gegangen werden soll.

Collegebesuch ist eine große Sache hier und wird dementsprechend propagiert. In Economics haben wir immer wieder gelernt wie viel mehr ein College-Gelehrter verdient als jemand der nur einen High School Abschluss hat und in meinem Health-Buch gibt es Statistiken über die höhere Lebenserwartung von "Bachelors" und "Masters" (alles Titel für verschiedene Grade eines College-Abschlusses).
Das ist zwar auch in Österreich bekannt, aber es wird hier doch mehr betont als wir in Österreich es vielleicht gewohnt sind.
Als Senior hier in Tivy High School bekomme ich hautnah mit, wie groß die Anstrengungen sein können, auf ein College zu kommen. Das ist nämlich ganz und gar nicht einfach, und oft versenden Studenten mehr als 10 Bewerbungen für Colleges überall in den USA.

Besondere Wichtigkeit besitzt deshalb auch der Scholastic Aptitude Test (= Studienbegabungstest), kurz SAT. Der SAT ist der wohl wichtigste Test auf dem Weg zum College. In drei Stunden werden die Schüler auf verbales und mathematisches Können getestet, in Form von 138 multiple-choice Fragen.

Hier springen auch die häufigsten Kritiken ein - die multiple-choice Fragen. Meistens wird kritisiert dass ein multiple-choice Test nicht auf College-Tests und schon gar nicht auf das "wirkliche Leben" vorbereitet. Nichtsdestotrotz wird diese Praxis der multiple-choice Tests nicht nur beim SAT sondern bei praktisch allen Tests in allen Schulstufen in den USA angewandt. Ich selber habe wahrscheinlich mehr als 90% meiner Semesterexam Fragen mittels multiple-choice beantwortet, und sämtliche andere Tests während des Jahres liefen nach dem gleichen Schema ab. Während diese Praxis es wohl für die Schüler leichter macht, erhöht sie den Anteil an Bürokratie und Organisationsbedarf im gesamten Schulsystem. Auf der anderen Seite ermöglicht dieses System auch mehr Objektivität, oder was meint ihr dazu?

I saw the light. I saw the end. The end of the trilogy (or is it a trilogy?). It even was the first big movie I have ever seen the day it started.
Now, how was it? I will try not to tell anything about the story, because if you want that, you can either go and watch it or ask someone else.
Well, at least it was a lot better than "Reloaded", that is for sure. The story was written better, it had a better curve. The theme(s) were balanced and interesting. Now, when we disregard the nice Stallone-like fighting sequences (dangerous for epilepsy patients), it is a good ending for the trilogy (although the very end of the movie is ridiculous). It closes a circle, and somehow I got the feeling that it was some kind of Yin-Yang principle that directed the Wachowski brothers throughout the whole thing (which is also reflected in the story itself). The fighting scenes were better than in the second part, and the final fight of Neo had some great shots (I just say "Silhouette"). Some other things I liked a lot: Some of the characters developed very well (namely the Frenchmen, although his accent was so fake. But I liked the eyes <--> olives analogy).
This part also got back to the religious/spiritual theme many people found in the first part, and actually developed, enhanced it, I think, although it may not be interpreted that way as well.

One reason why I liked it because was because it met my expectations. And certainly, those expectations were low. I watched it anyway because I think if there is a whole story to be told, it shall be told. So I completed the trilogy (although it might be even more), and life's still fine.

High school high

Howdy, bloggers and readers!
School started this Monday, August 10. I?m attending Tivy high school (http://www.kerrvilleisd.net -> Tivy) in Kerrville. It is a whole new campus, so I?m not the only one who gets lost in this huge building! It takes you about 4-5 minutes to get from one side to the other. And with going to the restroom, etc. this is really hard to make! The ?tardy? policy is very strict here. The first time a student is late, his parents will be called, the second time his parents will be called and he/she has to face detention, and so it goes on?Not every teacher is going to really execute this policy, but it is actually a policy.
Another policy here is the ?closed campus? policy. That means that no student is allowed to go outside the building (or outside the dedicated cafeteria area, if he/she has lunch). And there are no exceptions of this rule. If you forgot your books or the whole backpack in your car (because most students drive to school, since it is outside town and they are allowed to drive by the age of 16) it your own bad luck. Even if you go outside the classroom to go to the toilet or something else, you would need a pass from the teacher. In my ?Health? class we are not even allowed to do this, and it is a 90-minutes period (I think a Health teacher should know better).
Oh, btw, these are my classes (a number indicates the level). Classes marked with ?G? were classes I had to take to graduate:
English 3
Fine Art Photography
Debate 2
Lunch
Honors band (this is the marching band that plays during football halftime, etc.)
US History (G)
Economics (G)
Computer Science 1
Health (G)

In Semester 2, which starts around Christmas, I will have some other classes.
I already had all of my classes, and I think I lit Computer Science, US History, Economics, band and Photography the most. Well, these are almost all of them, and this is because I could choose from almost every course they offer here. This is really cool, and so you are able to really take what you like!

With the band we practice almost every day, except Friday (and I have no school on Saturdays and Sundays). On Wednesday practice even starts at 0630 in the morning (0750 school begins, and it ends at 1520)!

Every morning there are announcements over the TV (every classroom has a TV, and every teacher and computer class (except Computer Science) has shiny new Dell computers and at the beginning of that there is always the pledge to the flag of the USA and to the flag of Texas. I don?t think this is a good way to educate children?But I?m glad to see how my photography class acted during the announcements ? chatting, playing and having fun (even during the ?moment of silence? after the pledges *g*).

Lunch here is quite lousy, I had a fried chicken steak the first day and it was awful! I will never have something like this again, so I chose a Cheeseburger the next day. It tasted better and may have been even healthier. A real cool thing about lunch here is that they offer many fresh fruit. I really like that and it is a good idea!

Tomorrow, Thursday, August 21st I have a concert with band! I?m really looking forward to it because I improved a lot since I came here!

The Texan weblog

Maybe you've read already about the whole thing at http://flashmob.twoday.net, but here is my story again:
I am right now sitting near the town of Kerrville in Texas/USA. I've come here on Sunday, August as an exchange student. It really is great here! The climate is hot, but since everything is air-conditioned, it's not that bad. Yesterday evening I even had to wear a pullover at home. That "home" is a house about 15 minutes off Kerrville, which is a city 95 km northwest of San Antonio, the next bigger city.
It is very beautiful here, and it appears a bit like in West Croatia - only that it's a bit greener.

Kerrville has about 18000 inhabitants. Nevertheless, it is HUGE! It just stretches so far - there are two main roads, crossing in the middle of the town. And most of the city is build along those roads. Also, the space between houses or stores is a lot more than in Austria/Europe.
Well, the US seem to be really huge - also the cars. Over 50% of all cars (and I checked that number carefully) are those SUVs. Of course nobody would need such a car, even here in Texas (every road is covered with asphalt). This is one thing I don't like that much about it...my family has about 4 cars or so, with 4 family members...
We do live here a bit outside the town, so we need the car (there are no busses). But 4 of them...*g*

I'm glad I could finally find the time to write my blog - nevertheless I have got only 28.8kb/s internet speed...and that to me, who is used to 768kb/s of pure cable speed...Fortunately, the twoday.net sites do load really fast! Unfortunately, this is also the reason why it is really difficult to upload pictures - but I'll do my best to post some pictures here too!

Well, I think that's it for today - I'll try to write some more ASAP.

Ich mag keine Heurigen

Ich war gestern wieder bei einem Heurigen. Es war ein "Klassenheuriger". Mit Schülern, Eltern und Lehrern. Weinseliges Gerede im Gelsenmilleu. Wenigstens hab ich dort einen Kollegen aus der Tanzschule gesehen.
Das Prinzip ist faul! Der ursprüngliche Zweck eines Heurigen liegt im Besaufen mit schlechtem - aber billigen - Wein aus dem selben Jahr. Das ist doch beknackt. Ich habe gestern auch bei einem Freund von mir einen Wein probiert. Furchtbar, wirklich unter aller Kanone.
Mehr will ich dazu jetzt gar nicht sagen.

Donauinselfest - Mia rockt

Gestern war ich (wie auch schon Samstag) beim Donauinselfest. Ich bin nur wegen Mia hingegangen, außerdem wollte ich dort noch jemanden treffen. Sie (die ich treffen wollte) hat dann leider nur mehr die letzten zwei Lieder gehört, weil Mia schon 20 Minuten zu früh (!) angefangen hat.
Aber: Mia hat so extrem gerockt, das war nicht mehr normal.
Der Sound war zwar wieder nicht besonders toll abgemischt, aber besser als am Samstag.
Mia sind live einfach ein Erlebnis. Hingehen, hingehen, hingehen!!!
